The Aortic Institute of the West provides one of the most advanced hybrid surgical/interventional operating suites west of the Mississippi!
Our Endovascular Care Center provides patients with both simple and complex aortic disease a place for an honest appraisal about their chances both with treatment and without.
Aortic disease patients who have been told that their risk for surgery is too high frequently come to us for a second opinion. Our endovascular surgeon, Dr. Schorlemmer, has a fantastic success rate for performing complex endograft procedures that neither surgical nor interventional personnel are routinely trained to do.
Conditions we treat:
- Aortic diseases
- Aneurysms in the aorta and other sites
- Dissections in the aorta and other sites
- Aortic occlusive disease
- Peripheral vascular disease
Procedures we perform:
- Endovascular Thoracic Aneurysms Repair (EVAR)
- Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR)
- Endovascular Aortic Dissection Repair (EVADR)
- Open aortic aneurysm repair both chest and abdomen
- Peripheral vascular angioplasty, atherectomy, stents and endografts
- Open vascular bypass grafts in all locations
We specialize in endovascular surgery. This is a minimally invasive cardiovascular surgery done through the groin or arm. This procedure is designed to repair the damaged blood vessel from the inside. The surgeon uses a needle to puncture the access site instead of making an incision. A small plastic catheter called a sheath is then inserted and through it the balloon, stent, or endograft is applied in the appropriate location in the vessel. The endograft is an expandable stent liner made of Teflon.
Hybrid Operating Suite
Endovascular surgery is performed in the Timpanogos Regional Hospital hybrid operating suite. This suite is not only one of a kind in Utah, but is extremely unique across the country. This 2500 square foot hybrid surgical facility provides state of the art technology for both open and endovascular surgical procedures. It allows an immediate shift from interventional procedure to open surgical procedure when necessary. Using advanced imaging technology, with high-resolution monitors, the surgeon can clearly see diseased or injured vessels and accurately deploy the appropriate implantable device to correct the problem.
The capability of the hybrid operating suite means the patient spends less time under anesthesia and has reduced exposure to radiation. Endovascular operations are very well tolerated. Most patients leave the hospital less than 24 hours after the procedure, and often will be discharged the same day surgery is performed.
